Rough Work, I'm Just Inspired Today!

The work here is still in a very rough stage, but I wanted to share some designs that I'm working on right now! Inspiration is such a mysterious thing...for me, it seems to creep into my mind while I am asleep. I usually don't set out to make a piece with an exact plan in mind. I don't typically sketch anything out. I know that's unusual for a jewelry artist, but it's just what works best for me!

One good thing about having a somewhat cluttered workbench is that I am surrounded by all kinds of beautiful 'tidbits' that I can incorporate into my design, with just a glance. Things just seem to come together best that way. Today is a perfect example. I've been eyeing this stunning Jasper that reminds me of the ocean for a few weeks now. I have also had this 'blank' with a large copper metal clay lilly soldered to it, sitting for at least a week.

Today it hit me, while finishing up a couple of custom orders. Pulling from 'this' and 'that' lying about my bench, these are pieces that I now can't quite get my hands to work fast enough to create!! There are a hundred things that I "should" be doing, but I can't pull myself away!!

Happy New Year everyone!!

I'm going to take this fresh beginning to set some goals that I want to accomplish as an artist for the year - seriously - this time! I have a few sketchy ideas of new design paths and some techniques that I want to learn. As these ideas become more clear, I will be posting about them here on my blog !

The first thing on my list has begun today!! I have joined a group of jewelry artists who are participating in a challenge on Flickr - "Ring a Week" for 2011! My entry for Week #1 is this organic ring with a Native Spiderweb Copper cabochon, set in sterling.

I hope you will enjoy following me on this journey through the year - I will be posting my ring every week, plus featuring other artists who are creating a Ring a Week for the challenge!

Hi Everyone!

It's been such a long time since I've posted! I've been very busy with custom jewelry orders, you can check out photos in my Metalwork set on Flickr, just click on the photo above to visit!

I have been enjoying my journey into working with stone and metal, still learning new skills and experimenting with ideas! I plan to start updating my Blog frequently again, not only bringing photos and links to new items, but to share some interesting jewelry sites, as I come across them; and now and then a tutorial, or other educational topic.

I have also started a brand new FaceBook FAN page for Simply Adorning, I'd love it if you would go to my page and hit the "Like" button. You will then receive updates as they happen. Spring Green and Simply Rosy Stacking Ring Sets

I've added two new versions of my sterling/gemstone stacking rings to my Etsy shop. The Spring Green set was conceived as I worked on a wedding band for bride-to-be Lauren Rose. She wanted to closely match her antique wedding ring and in searching for a patterned wire to match, I fell in love with this wire to add to my stacking rings line. The Simply Rosy set is simply to celebrate the beginning of Spring!! Both sets feature soft, pastel colored gemstones, but both sets can be customized to any gem you'd like!

Lauren was really a pleasure to work with on this custom order - she also makes jewelry and has an Etsy shop full of delightful designs! She also blogged about her new wedding band here, and you can check out her work here: L.Rose Designs on Etsy. My best wishes go out to this lovely couple!!

I've been holding onto this lovely unakite cabochon for just the right project, and this was definitely it!! The moment I saw the stone, it reminded me of a gorgeous floral Monet painting!!

For the challenge piece, all I needed to add were some silver vines and an adorable sterling birdie!

Yeah! I finally found some time to fabricate a design concept that has been rolling around in my head for quite some time now!! I made these toggle clasps to go with my chain maille and other silver bracelets. What fun! Now that I have worked on a couple, I have sooo many other ideas that can branch out from here! The possibilities are endless!! One example, the toggle used as a pendant!

New Sizing Available for Shop Items!

Unfortunately, when working with most types of stone, once the stone is secured in the setting, there is no way to resize the ring, or change the piece to a pendant. So.....I will be listing the majority of my new pieces, before the final fabrication steps are complete, so that they may be custom sized as rings or pendants! These are pictures of my first listings of this nature!!

Bead Trends magazine is a fairly new publication all about making jewerly. The magazine is great, but is fairly pricey (I think $17.95 per issue).

You can go online and pay only $4.95 per issue to download an e-copy. I've just downloaded the November 2009 issue, and it's very user-friendly, let's you zoom in very easily and is full of designs! Being a jewelry magazine junkie myself, thought I'd pass this on to anyone else who enjoys all of the beading magazines! Here's the link:

Workshop with Connie Fox

I was so lucky to have attended a workshop in Ohio with Connie Fox yesterday! I learned so many cool new techniques! We colored and stamped anodised aluminum, then wire and tube riveted the pieces to textured sterling silver links. What a blast! My head is spinning with new ideas, adding some color to metal. If you ever have the chance to take a class from Connie, do it!! She's a FABulous teacher, and the most wonderful person! You will learn so much!

I've been working day and night, getting ready to do a show in Columbus this coming Friday evening. I'm hoping for a good turnout, but you never know! Very Exciting News…..and a new listing in my DesignsByLaura Etsy shop!!! The new Belle Armoire Jewelry issue is about to hit the newsstands, and I have two wire jewelry projects that have been published in this Summer 2009 issue!! :-)

I have also previously had a project published in the current BAJ issue, if you happen to have a copy! My "Blooming Vines" pendant was published in the Spring 2009 issue, in an article called "Blueprint for Creativity"

Results of CopprClay Kiln Firing Last Night!

Yeah!! I have to say that I'm very pleased with the copper pieces! Very lovely color and texture! It's not as dense as the bronze, I should be able to dap and shape some pieces....more experimenting later!!

First Batch of CopprClay Tonight!!

Tonight I tried my first batch of CopprClay, it just came in the mail this afternoon. I have to say that I LOVE the consistency of it - much more smooth and pleasing to work with than the BronzClay, by far! So there is one plus for CopprClay, already! My kiln is ramping as I type, and the whole firing process will be done in about 2 hours and 10 minutes from now! I'll post some pictures in the morning, I can't wait to see what I get!!

Luckily, for those who are impatient like myself, the firing process is much shorter, just ramp and hold for 2 hours!

BronzClay Pieces

I've been working with BronzClay for several months now, loving it and trying to get a consistent patina in the process. I think that may be a losing battle, as I can't find any links between fantastically colorful batches and brown batches with no patina at all. I have had to resolve to 'take what I get' and am thrilled when I open the kiln to color!!! The 2 pictures above are from pretty colorful firings!

I created this bracelet for Bev Gallerani of Mango Tango, out of Bev's own FABulous boro beads. I am the lucky recipient of one of Bev's wonderful metal clay necklaces!! I'm thrilled to say that I have been granted "Teacher" status on the site, and my first tutorial, which is FREE for downloading, has been posted. It is a step by step tutorial on the proper crimping with a pair of crimping pliers.

Today I completed a piece that was made for an Etsy Team that I am fortunate enough to be a member of. This month's theme was "Art Nouveau", and these are pics of my submission!

I love soldering and fusing fine and sterling silver circles! I just finished this mixed metal bracelet to fill an order for an Etsy customer - I'm starting on more of this style right away!

"Heavy Metal" seed bead bracelet

I have been wanting to try one of Shelley Nybakke's "Heavy Metal" bangles ever since I saw "A Metalsmith's Match", published in Bead & Button in the June 2007 issue. Well, I still haven't gotten around to that bangle yet, but I did manage to make the "Sometimes Less is More" bracelet published in Bead Trends (Sept/Oct 2008 issue).

I'm in LOVE with these "Heavy Metal" beads!! This bracelet feels as good as it looks!! (Gunmetal Size 8's, with Crystal AB 2X Swarovski's)

I have a feeling I'm about to go on a metal seed bead bangle-binge!!! :-)

I just love this sweet pendant! I learned how to make this beadcap on Urban Maille's website with jump rings made out of diamond shaped wire....this is one of Dawn White's gorgeous boro beads (Dudamart)! Isn't it cool?!

I've been working mostly on earrings the past few days, and took photos this morning. Some of these earrings are already available in my Simply Adorning Etsy shop, the rest will be listed very soon! I love making my "Sweet Something's" style, I have a great collection of beautiful briolette stones to use, more to come soon!
